Bamboo pajamas are not automatically better than modal, because most bamboo pajamas are actually rayon (viscose) made from bamboo pulp, which is the same fiber family as modal. The real differences come down to the raw material, how the fiber is engineered and how the fabric is certified, and on those points TENCEL™ Modal is a dependable choice for everyday pajamas.
That can be surprising, because "bamboo" sounds like a plant you could wear straight off the stalk. Below, we explain what the label means, how modal differs, and what to check before you buy either one.
What bamboo pajamas are actually made of
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says a textile can only be called bamboo if it is made directly from actual bamboo fiber. When bamboo is used as the plant source for rayon or viscose, the FTC says it should be labeled "rayon (or viscose) made from bamboo." The encyclopedia entry on bamboo textiles notes that the vast majority of bamboo textile sold is actually viscose rayon.
In other words, the bamboo is a starting material. The FTC has explained that any plant or tree can be used as the cellulose source for rayon, but the fiber that is created is rayon. The agency has also said that rayon does not keep any natural antimicrobial properties of the bamboo plant, so claims like that deserve a second look.
What modal is, and how it differs
Modal is also a rayon, made from regenerated cellulose. Textile Exchange describes modal as a variant of viscose, and notes that TENCEL™ Modal from LENZING™ is made from beech wood harvested in certified European forests using an integrated pulp-to-fiber process. The encyclopedia entry on rayon likewise describes modal as made by spinning beech-tree cellulose.
What sets modal apart is how it behaves when wet. Ohio State University Extension explains that ordinary rayon has low wet strength and can stretch or shrink when wet, while high-wet-modulus rayons, often sold as modal, have high wet strength and can be machine washed and tumble dried. The rayon entry likewise describes high-wet-modulus rayon as stronger when wet. That matters for pajamas, which go through the wash often. Read does modal shrink for care steps.
Bamboo viscose vs TENCEL™ Modal at a glance
| Question | Bamboo viscose or rayon | TENCEL™ Modal |
|---|---|---|
| What is the raw material? | Bamboo pulp | Beech wood pulp |
| What kind of fiber is it? | Rayon (regenerated cellulose) | Modal, a high-wet-modulus rayon |
| What should the label say? | "Rayon made from bamboo" or "viscose made from bamboo" | Modal, often with the TENCEL™ trademark |
| Does it keep bamboo's plant properties? | No, according to the FTC | Not applicable |
| How does it handle washing? | Depends on the fiber and finish; ordinary rayon can stretch or shrink when wet | Higher wet strength; machine washable |

The processing question
Because both fibers start as wood or plant pulp, it is tempting to assume both are low impact. The process matters more than the plant. The encyclopedia entry on rayon explains that conventional viscose is made by treating pulp with chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide. The FTC has likewise said that the rayon manufacturing process uses toxic chemicals and results in the emission of hazardous air pollutants.
So "made from bamboo" on its own tells you very little about how a fabric was made. Look instead for how the fiber was produced and how the finished fabric is certified. Eberjey describes the TENCEL™ Modal in its Gisele Long PJ Set as verified by OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. If you want to understand the differences between the two TENCEL™ fibers, read TENCEL™ Lyocell vs TENCEL™ Modal.
How the two feel and perform
Because both are rayons, bamboo viscose and modal share a lot in day-to-day wear. Ohio State University Extension describes rayon as breathable and more moisture absorbent than cotton, and the rayon entry describes rayon fabrics as soft, smooth and highly absorbent.
The bigger differences you will notice come from the fabric itself rather than the fiber name: the knit, the weight, whether there is stretch, and how well the garment is cut and finished. A well-made modal set and a well-made bamboo viscose set can both feel lovely on the first night. Wet strength is where modal's engineering makes the clearest difference. If you have sensitive skin, see pajamas for sensitive skin, and talk to your doctor about persistent irritation.

Frequently asked questions
Are bamboo pajamas better than modal?
Not automatically. Most bamboo pajamas are rayon made from bamboo pulp, the same fiber family as modal. Modal is a high-wet-modulus rayon made from beech wood, with higher wet strength than ordinary rayon.
Is bamboo fabric really made of bamboo?
Usually only as a starting material. The FTC says a textile can only be called bamboo if it is made directly from bamboo fiber; rayon made using bamboo should be labeled rayon or viscose made from bamboo.
Is modal the same as bamboo viscose?
They are related but not the same. Both are rayons made from regenerated cellulose, but modal is made from beech wood and is a high-wet-modulus rayon with higher wet strength.
Are bamboo pajamas antibacterial?
The FTC has said that rayon does not retain any natural antimicrobial properties of the bamboo plant, so be cautious of that claim on rayon made from bamboo.
Does modal shrink in the wash?
Ohio State University Extension says high-wet-modulus rayons, often sold as modal, can be machine washed and tumble dried. Always follow the care label on your pajamas.
Is bamboo viscose eco-friendly?
The plant source alone does not tell you. The FTC says the rayon manufacturing process uses toxic chemicals, so look at how the fiber was produced rather than the plant it started from.
