Kids’ Pajama Safety: What ‘Snug-Fitting’ Means and Why It Matters

Posted by Dani May on

Kids’ pajamas have to be snug-fitting (or flame-resistant) because U.S. federal rules require children’s sleepwear in sizes above 9 months through size 14 to be one or the other. Snug-fitting sleepwear is less likely to ignite and, if it does catch, burns less readily, because there is little air under the garment to feed a fire.

That’s the reason behind the snug cut, the “wear snug-fitting” label and the hangtag on many children’s pajamas. Here is what the rules say, how to check fit at home, and how Eberjey describes its kids’ sets.

What the federal rules require

Children’s sleepwear in the U.S. is covered by two federal flammability standards: one for sizes above 9 months through 6X and one for sizes 7 through 14. Together they apply to garments sized above 9 months and up to size 14.

  • What counts as sleepwear: items such as nightgowns, pajamas, robes and loungewear intended primarily for sleeping or sleep-related activities.
  • Two ways to comply: these garments must be either flame-resistant or snug-fitting.
  • Snug-fitting exception: tight-fitting garments are excepted from the sleepwear flammability testing, but must meet sizing, measurement, tagging and labeling requirements, and the general apparel flammability rules still apply.
  • Infant exception: garments sized 9 months or smaller that meet length limits set in the rule don’t have to meet the sleepwear standard, though they too remain subject to the general apparel rules.

Why snug-fitting matters

Fire needs oxygen. Snug-fitting garments sit close to a child’s body, so there is little air underneath to feed a flame, and a close fit is also less likely to come into contact with a flame in the first place. Loose clothing leaves an air gap that can help a fire keep burning.

That is also why loose-fitting cotton or cotton-blend garments, such as oversized T-shirts, aren’t a good substitute for children’s sleepwear: they aren’t made to meet these rules, and loose fabric is more likely to catch fire.

What makes a pajama “snug-fitting” under the rule

“Snug” isn’t just a feeling. The regulation sets maximum body measurements for each size, and a tight-fitting garment must not exceed them. A few other requirements for snug-fitting styles:

  • Trim: no lace, ribbon, appliqué or other trim that extends more than ¼ inch (6 mm) from the garment.
  • Sleeves and legs: sleeves narrow from the shoulder to the wrist, and pant legs narrow from the thigh to the hem.
  • Permanent label: “Wear snug-fitting, not flame resistant,” along with the garment’s size.
  • Hangtag: “For child’s safety, garment should fit snugly. This garment is not flame resistant. Loose-fitting garment is more likely to catch fire.”

How to check the fit at home

When you shop, look for tags that say the garment is flame-resistant or snug-fitting, and if you buy snug-fitting sleepwear, buy true to size. Then check the fit on your child.

  • Buy the size that fits now. Snug-fitting sleepwear has to fit snugly to do its job, so sizing up to “grow into” works against the design.
  • Look for close contact. The top and pants should sit close to the body, not hang or billow.
  • Recheck after growth spurts and many washes. A pair that has stretched out or no longer sits close to the body no longer fits snugly.
  • Keep the label. The permanent label tells you whether the garment is snug-fitting or flame-resistant.
  • Skip the big T-shirt. A parent’s tee is comfortable, but a loose cotton T-shirt isn’t made to meet children’s sleepwear rules.

  • TENCEL™ Modal sets: Eberjey describes the fabric as buttery soft and verified by OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. Care is simple: turn inside out, machine wash cold with like colors on a gentle cycle, use only non-chlorine bleach when needed and tumble dry low.
  • Flannel: Eberjey says the 50% organic cotton, 50% modacrylic blend was designed to make the PJs children friendly without the use of harmful chemicals. Its care label says to machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang dry. Because it isn’t snug-fitting, a relaxed children’s sleepwear set like this one has to meet the flame-resistance requirement instead, so check its label and hangtag.

Frequently asked questions

Why do kids pajamas have to be snug fitting?

U.S. rules require children’s sleepwear in sizes above 9 months through 14 to be either flame-resistant or snug-fitting. Snug-fitting sleepwear is less likely to ignite or burn readily because there is little air under the garment to feed a fire.

What ages do the children’s sleepwear rules cover?

The standards apply to sleepwear sized above 9 months and up to size 14: one covers sizes above 9 months through 6X, and the other covers sizes 7 through 14.

What does “Wear snug-fitting, not flame resistant” mean?

It means the garment is not flame resistant and instead meets the children’s sleepwear rule by fitting close to the body. The required hangtag explains that for a child’s safety the garment should fit snugly, because a loose-fitting garment is more likely to catch fire.

Should I buy kids’ pajamas a size up?

Not for snug-fitting styles. Buy snug-fitting sleepwear true to size, because it must fit snugly to work as intended.

Can my child sleep in a loose T-shirt?

It’s best not to. Loose-fitting cotton or cotton-blend T-shirts aren’t made to meet children’s sleepwear rules, and loose garments are more likely to catch fire.

Do baby pajamas have to be snug fitting?

Garments sized 9 months or smaller that meet the rule’s length limits are not required to meet the sleepwear flammability standard, though they must still meet general apparel flammability rules.

Are Eberjey kids’ pajamas snug fit?

Eberjey describes its Kids TENCEL™ Modal Unisex Long and Short PJ Sets (sizes 2–10) and its Gisele kids ruffle set (sizes 4–10) as snug fit. The Kids Flannel Long PJ Set (sizes 2–14) is described as relaxed and true to size. Check the label and hangtag on any pair.
