What Type of Fabric is TENCEL™?

Posted by Bianca Marcos on

TENCEL™ is a surprisingly soft, yet durable fabric. It was developed in 1972 as a part of the Rayon family, but it’s far better for the environment in many different ways.

It’s also cellulose-based and hypoallergenic. It's a fiber created from wood pulp, or regenerated cellulose, from the sustainably grown eucalyptus, beech, birch, and spruce trees, It is revered as being highly eco-friendly. For our super cozy sleep and loungewear, our TENCEL™ fabrics are generated exclusively from the raw beech tree.

Where Does TENCEL™ Come From?

TENCEL™ is a brand name for one of a number of fabric products developed by an Austrian company with factories around the world.

Its fiber is formed from the wood pulp of trees that has been chemically stripped, pushed through an extruder, and then ‘spun’ into a thread. The process is similar to making rayon but uses far fewer toxic chemicals.

TENCEL™ fabrics often perform better within blind ‘softness’ tests compared to cotton and cotton blend sheets.

At Eberjey, we’re proud of the TENCEL™ collection we have created.

Is TENCEL™ a Natural or Synthetic Fiber?

It is a natural fiber (to start with) because it is sourced from the wood pulp of trees. However, the chemicals used are much ‘cleaner’ than the production of synthetics fabrics you’d know well.

By cleaner, we mean that the chemicals used are not only much safer (for workers and the earth), but the chemicals that are used are in a closed-loop system. This means that those chemicals are reused and never let loose into the environment, or local water system. In fact, the water and chemical recovery rate in this closed-loop system is better than 99%. That’s something we can get behind.

As a finished fabric, it’s super-soft, breathable, hypoallergenic, and long-lasting, which is why we love it so much. And, because of the refinement of the production process and the fact that the fabric is biodegradable, we feel a sense of pride in being conscious of the future and environment as well.

In the end, even though TENCEL™ is a responsibly sourced, processed, and naturally sustainable wood pulp, it uses chemicals in the process of its creation. Because of this meeting of the two fabric production worlds, it has sometimes been called a ‘semi-synthetic’ fabric.

Is TENCEL™ a Breathable Fabric?

Absolutely!

TENCEL™ made products are incredibly breathable, soft, lightweight, hypoallergenic, and durable. In fact, it’s considered more breathable than cotton, as well as softer to the touch.

Is TENCEL™ a Luxury Fabric?

Many think so. TENCEL™ is known for its unique softness, and breathability while being hypoallergenic. All of that, and it’s surprisingly durable (resistant to pilling) — a fantastic mix of properties.

Though it does cost a bit more than traditional cotton to produce, we already know it’s softer, that it will last longer, and isn’t price prohibitive, giving you quality and comfort to enjoy for many years to come. Accessible luxury.

All in all, TENCEL™ made sleep sets and pajamas have so much going for them, that it’s a fabric definitely worthy of your consideration. Especially when you’re shopping for your future favorite sleep or loungewear, for your or the whole family.

At Eberjey we offer two forms of TENCEL™ Modal fabrics for our sleep and loungewear collections. We’re certain you’ll find something you’ll love.

TENCEL™ Modal:

TENCEL™ Modal is an incredible fabric, and women (and men) around the globe agree. Some of our all-time bestsellers use this material. It retains its color and shape wonderfully while taking ‘soft’ to a new level and is resistant to pilling. Our chosen fiber is derived from raw beech tree pulp, making it completely biodegradable.

It is certified by OEKO-TEX®; one of the best labels known for textile tests. Let’s take what we love to wear onto a more sustainable path.

Plush TENCEL™ Modal

Plush TENCEL™ Modal couples the luxuriousness and durability of TENCEL™ fibers with a touchably soft, plush, whisper feel. You’ll find it as the foundation of our Softest Sweats collection, naturally. All of this calm beauty, yet it still retains its shape and is resistant to pilling,

Like its cousin, Plush TENCEL™ Modal is also sustainable and biodegradable. This material is also OEKO-TEX® certified, which means it’s been rigorously tested and cleared of any harmful substances.
